Symposium "Cerebral visual impairment (CVI)"

ERFCON 2017 CVI 01Over the last few decades, the prevalence of visual impairment caused by untreated neuro-ophthalmological disorders has been increasing. Hence, Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) has become the leading cause of visual impairment in many countries. Such visual impairment is defined as a bilateral loss of vision, caused by lesions of the posterior visual pathway, with normal pupillary responses and an eye examination that shows no abnormalities. CVI encompasses a wide range of visual disabilities from no light perception to normal visual acuity with specific problems in visual functioning.

CVI is most common in children with perinatal brain damage, in children with risk of disability, or with disability, but also in adults that suffered a cerebrovascular insult, brain trauma or other causes. CVI is often associated with other difficulties in people of different age groups. However, this visual impairment, due to specific problems in visual functioning, most often remains unrecognized. It is often the case for specific behavior of people with CVI to be attributed to other difficulties, leading to incorrect planning and implementation of rehabilitation procedures that interfere with a person's ability to function in a community.

During the symposium we plan to provide a review of the latest information on CVI. Participants will show assessment and rehabilitation methods of CVI through scientific studies and case studies of children and adults with CVI.
